![]() Updating every few years or so, it would not be so out of the ordinary to expect that the software would have been supporting more smart devices. Windows Live Messenger was truly a fantastic chat app all the way until its timely demise. Its discontinuation is not due to poor quality, however. Following Microsoft's acquisition of Skype, the program was officially retired, and Skype was made the official Windows messaging software. However, as technology advanced and other programs (like Skype) took the stage, Windows Live Messenger was used less and less. ![]() The chat program housed various features that would later be seen in other messaging platforms: social media integration, offline messaging, the ability to stay "hidden" to some viewers while online to others, games, photo and video support, and many more bells and whistles that truly made it unique for the time. Today, however, the software has zero users. In 2009, Microsoft reported that over 30 million people used the software. The software was extremely popular, seeing releases on many platforms (Windows, Xbox 360, macOS). With the EOL of the Windows Essentials 2012 in 2017, it is no longer available for download at Microsoft.Windows Live Messenger, originally known as MSN messenger, was one of the very first instant-messaging programs to hit the internet. It can be installed standalone or as part of the Windows Live suite. Since then, Windows Live Messenger needed to be downloaded from the Microsoft web site. ![]() It is also available in pre-reset builds of Longhorn, but was scrapped from the installation image after development reset. ![]() For older systems, there were either stand-alone installers in form of IExpress, as well as the installer for Internet Explorer 5.5, which included the messenger as an option. MSN or Windows Messenger is available as a component of Windows Me and XP. ![]()
